Hats show in the first paint: the app holds the registrar's whole list of who wears what (/hats/worn, a couple of dozen heads, kept per device and refreshed every two minutes), so a face seen for the first time on a message page gets its hat at once instead of after a 400 ms batch and a round tripHEADmaster
